My good friend Paula talked about work & travel abroad, focusing on working in the United States. She named two agencies, Work and Travel and WEUSA Chile.
She explained what the requirements are in order to apply for a job in U.S.A. and the areas that students could work in the States. I know what she chose this topic, she did it because she has participated in this exchange program and she has gone to work in the States, so she knows what the benefits are if students participate in this adventure.
I think this is an excellent opportunity for young people who do not have children and can live abroad for 4 months. Without a doubt, this is a great opportunity to improve our language and learn to do everything on our own.

TeeN PReGNaNCY
MY PReSeNTaTiON!!
I was nervous after presenting and I did not want to do it haha… but it did it anyways.
It was so hard to find out an interesting topic to talk about and at the same time, a topic that catch my classmates’ attention. So I decided to talk about “teen pregnancy” but focusing it on young people who are still attending high school. According to what I found out, Health Ministry statistics show that babies born to mother between 15 and 19 years old accounted for over 15 percent of live birth in Chile.
Chile’s Health and Education Ministries hope to significantly reduce the number of unwanted teen pregnancies in the country before Chile’s 2010 bicentennial celebrations. Through educational programs and changes in public health clinics.
I did not want to talk about this topic saying this is something we have to reject or. I wanted to show that we as future teachers, it’s possible that we have to live and see this situation inside our classroom and we have to be aware of it right now and know what to react. I hope it had helped!

A SiLENT WAY...
Our last class it was only presentations. There were 8 individuals and including mine. The first person who did it was Marlene Rivera. She talked about “a Silent way”. When I heard the name, I had no idea what it meant. According to what I found in Wikipedia, “The Silent Way is an approach to language teaching designed to enable students to become independent, autonomous and responsible learners. It is part of a more general pedagogical approach to teaching and learning created by Caleb Gattegno. It is constructivist in nature, leading students to develop their own conceptual models of all the aspects of the language. The best way of achieving this is to help students to be experimental learners. The Silent Way allows this” (Wikipedia, Nov 2008). But even after reading this, it’s not completely clear what it is, I mean, if I hadn’t seen Marlene’s presentation, I couldn’t figure it out. Marlene was very clear explaining about this topic and she told us how it works. This works through colors and sounds, every sound is represented by a color and in this way when people see a color immediately associated this color to a particular sound.
According to what Marlene explained us, this method works on teaching any language.
Marlene was very clear with all the info that she said, and also I could see that she had researched about this topic because she understood very well what she was talking about.
I think I am going to search for info about it, and maybe someday try to teach using this way, who knows…

THiNGS WiLL CHANGE
Last Tuesday, Barack Obama was elected 44th President of United States of America and the first Afro-American ever to become President. He represents a lot of feelings for American people because the last eight years, their country has been target of several changes that people would not had wanted to be involved, such as 9/11 in New York City, Iraq War and recently this economic crisis that every corner of the world has started to suffer.
Lots of people wonder why the color of the new President of United States is an issue or something really important, and this is because in the 50’s and 60’s black people in the states had to fight against who discriminated them. In those years, blacks had to use different things in order not to get involved with whites, for example whites created places like restrooms, busses, schools among others, and black people were not free to do what they wanted to do. But nowadays, things seem have changed in America, and all the citizens have elected to the first Afro-American as their president.
Obama has a big job to do, his country is going through the worst crisis in the last hundred years, and it is even worse than the great depression. Besides he promised to take away all the army in Iraq as soon as he can, and finishing with this 5 years war that has no reason today. And I consider that this endless war was one of the most important reason why Obama is President today, it is because American people are tired of watching how their relatives and friends have to leave the country to go to Iraq and do not know if they are going to come back alive.
On January 20th, Obama will take over right and go to the White House, and it will happen the Martin Luther King’s day. Luther King fought for black people rights during 60’s in America, is it just a coincidence?

FEMiCiDE iS NOT FASHiONABLE
Unfortunately, every week we are witnessed how a woman is killed by her couple. Katherinne talked about this issue and she focused this topic on how a jeans brand gains money showing this abuse like something normal.
Katherinne’s performance was good. We can notice that she had investigated what she was going to talk about.
We have to know about this important topic because we are going to deal with a lot of people, who have different realities at their home, and probably one of them is living a situation of violence at home and we have no idea about it. It is important to say that Femicide starts as simple violence, it can be just verbally and then turning into physical and killing someone.
Please, be aware what is happening next to you!!!

STReSS
When the year is ending, people start suffering stress. Especially students because testes are coming soon! Nicole talked about this topic in her presentation. She focused on what teachers should do for deal with it inside the classroom, and also what we as teachers should do as well.
Nicole was very nervous, and I think she forgot to say some things because she tended to read what she had done in her slides.
I really liked her presentation because she was very clear on what she wanted to show, and as I said before she gave us some tips related to this matter.
Here we have some tips::
- Do not try to accomplish too many tasks in one day.
- Get plenty of sleep.
- Find things to laugh at; watch a funny movie, tell a joke.

GENDER BiAS
"Sitting in the same classroom, reading the same textbook, listening to the same teacher, boys and girls receive very different educations." (Sadker, 1994) In fact, upon entering school, girls perform equal to or better than boys on nearly every measure of achievement, but by the time they graduate high school or college, they have fallen behind. (Sadker, 1994)
This is an interesting topic that Fernanda talked about in her presentation.
Actually I did not know anything about it, but after Fernanda’s performance I realized that this is very common in schools.
For example where I did my professional training, students were divided into women and men at physical education class.
At the beginning, Fernanda was really nervous; she even had to stop for awhile. I think this is okay, everyone gets nervous in an oral presentation, and the most important thing is she was able to overcome it.
The words you see below are some words that Fernanda mentioned during her presentation:
mankind; humanity, humankind, human civilization.
man-made: synthetic, manufactured, artificial,imitation.
businessman: executive, wholesaler, business person.
cameraman: camera operator, technician
congressman: member of Congress, representative.
craftsman: carpenter, artisan, skilled craftworker
landlord: land owner, property manager.

iNFORMATiON TECHNOLOGY
This week was the Daniela’s turn for her individual presentation..
She talked about what she learned in a seminary that she attended the previous week. This seminary was in Finis Terrae University and it was about IT’s in Chile.
She showed us several old pictures while she was telling us about all the changes that society has lived during the last 20 years. These changes are focused on technology.
She attended this seminary because she is working on this topic for her thesis; I am in her group of thesis work by the way.
Daniela did a great presentation. She was able to talk all the time without any helper and explaining every picture that she was showing. It is important to mention that she was prepared a video for her presentation but this did not work, so she did a PTT in 5 minutes and did her presentation anyways.

DRuGS
Diego talked about this topic in his individual performance. He focused especially on what happens to the body and brain when people consume drugs. In Chile one in four adolescents between 15 and 19 years old, say that they have consumed marihuana at least once. Hence, according to this statistics, these adolescents are inside our classroom and our task is show them how bad keeping this habit could be, and all the consequences that it could bring for their lives and family as well

TEEN SUiCiDE
Nowadays, we are living in society where everything has to be for 5 minutes ago and if you are not able to catch this world, the world will leave you out.
That is one of the reasons why adolescent suicide is getting common today, basically because they do not feel to fit in a group, in this way they start getting blue and their low self-esteem can convey them into a depression, thus killing themselves.
This was the topic that Eduardo talked about in their individual presentation.
Individual presentation is the new challenge that Mr. Litman asked us to do.
I think that individual presentations are a great opportunity to show our abilities and how we can catch the audience attention.
During Eduardo’s performance, he showed us a video.
Here it is…

ESTATUTO DOCENTE: a greek tragedy
Mario Waissbluth is a Universidad de Chile professor who carried out a research about “estatuto docente”
This is the evaluation that teachers have to do in order to know their ability level. This evaluation started 4 years ago and almost a half of the teachers have been assessed by this moment.
According to Waissbluth’s opinion the great guilty is our educational system that allows people, who have 400 points in P.S.U., studying for being teachers, and people who get those score in that exam are not able to comprehend what they are reading, even after leaving college and having their professional degree as a teacher.
I am as student for being a teacher; I do not feel that things are too bad right now. Yes, it is probably that old teachers do not want to be assessed because they left college and they never came back to study again but I do feel that a new generation of teacher is coming. They are some people who really want to change the old way to deal with students and teaching a subject.

NeW ViCTiMS....... TEACHERS
It may sound weird and incredible but unfortunately it happens. Teachers are being victims of bullying at schools by their own students.
In July, the newspaper “La Tercera” published that 40 cases of bullying to teachers were reported in private schools last year, and also they say that teachers do not study at university how to create an adequate climate inside the classroom.
Why are teachers being victims today? According to some researches, these point out that aggressors are also victims at their home, this means that those students that swearing at their teacher is why they are sworn at their parents.
I am wondering how to figure out this problem and I think that everything starts at home. If children learn at home that everyone is a human being that deserves respect, things could be change a little.

SEARCHiNG...
Mr. Litman asked us to research some concepts
These are:
Learning to learn: learning to learn refers to discover certain strategies in order to improve our way of studying and at the same time, to be aware of what we are able to do and we are not. It is because learning is a very personal matter, and a technique that works for one person, does not necessary work for everybody.
Aggression at school: Bullying is the act of intentionally causing harm to others, through verbal harassment, physical assault, or other more subtle methods of coercion such as manipulation.
Unfortunately, this issue is getting common in our schools today in Chile.
Victims of bullying can suffer from long term emotional and behavioral problems. Bullying can cause loneliness, depression, anxiety, lead to low self-esteem and increased susceptibility to illness.
Harassment: Harassment means a behavior that threatens or torments somebody, especially very persistently.
In terms of anti-discrimination, harassment is any form of behaviour that:
• You do not want;
• Offends, humiliates or intimidates you; and
• Targets you because of your sex, pregnancy, race, age, marital status, homosexuality, disability, transgender (transsexual) status or carers’ responsibilities.

PReuS
In Chile, before going to college, every student has to take an exam called P.S.U. (prueba de selección universitaria)
If you want to go to a public university, you have to do a great performance in this exam and get a high score, but to get it you should go to a Preuniversitario, and pay for it first.
This was the topic that Claudio, Paula and I talked about and discuss in our presentation.
We wanted to show to our classmates that it is not fair that if you go to school during twelve years, you also have to pay for a preu.
I think that we had a good performance because we knew about the topic and read enough about it. But we had some spelling problems in the PTT presentation, this was because all the information that we found was in Spanish, so we did not want to translate words like preuniversitarios or p.s.u. because we consider that these are words that represent something only for us in Chile and they would sound meaningless in English.
During the debate, I think that all our classmates were felt comfortable talking because everyone gave their opinions about this topic.

I AM an...ARTISAN
www.keirsey.com is a webpage where you can know what your personality is, just answering 70 easy questions.
According to this test, there are 4 types of personalities: Guardians,Rationals, Idealist and Artisan.
After answering those questions that is what I get about me...
Artisans are the temperament with a natural ability to excel in any of the arts, not only the fine arts such as painting and sculpting, or the performing arts such as music, theater, and dance, but also the athletic, military, political, mechanical, and industrial arts, as well as the "art of the deal" in business.
Artisans are most at home in the real world of solid objects that can be made and manipulated, and of real-life events that can be experienced in the here and now. Artisans have exceptionally keen senses, and love working with their hands. They seem right at home with tools, instruments, and vehicles of all kinds, and their actions are usually aimed at getting them where they want to go, and as quickly as possible. Thus Artisans will strike off boldly down roads that others might consider risky or impossible, doing whatever it takes, rules or no rules, to accomplish their goals. This devil-may-care attitude also gives the Artisans a winning way with people, and they are often irresistibly charming with family, friends, and co-workers.
Artisans want to be where the action is; they seek out adventure and show a constant hunger for pleasure and stimulation. They believe that variety is the spice of life, and that doing things that aren't fun or exciting is a waste of time. Artisans are impulsive, adaptable, competitive, and believe the next throw of the dice will be the lucky one. They can also be generous to a fault, always ready to share with their friends from the bounty of life. Above all, Artisans need to be free to do what they wish, when they wish. They resist being tied or bound or confined or obligated; they would rather not wait, or save, or store, or live for tomorrow. In the Artisan view, today must be enjoyed, for tomorrow may never come.
There are many Artisans, perhaps 30 to 35 percent of the population, which is good, because they create much of the beauty, grace, fun, and excitement the rest of us enjoy in life.
Artisans at Work
Artisans seek to make an impact upon the organizations where they work and upon society at large. Their alertness to current realities, the joy they take in variation, and their tendency to follow their instincts to 'what works' make them good troubleshooters and negotiators, talented performers and craftspeople and excellent leaders in all kinds of emergencies and chaotic situations.
Your heightened aesthetic sense can lead you to craft and perfect whatever work you take on. As a result, in your ideal job you would likely have the freedom to gather observations, collections of facts, and sets of skills in order to do your work. You can be thrilled when you slip through a window of strategic opportunity that colleagues or the competition haven’t yet seen.

First of all, what does curfew mean?
Curfew is an order by a government for certain persons to return home daily before a certain time
The question is this is still possible in the 21st century, and the answer is yes according what I read during my research for this topic.
In a small town called Vernon, CT, anyone under 18 years old have to be at home before 11 p.m., because if the police catch someone, they could pay a fine between 50 and 90 dollars. This rule was set into a couple of years ago in order to stop gans activities at nights. Police says that this has helped to clean up streets but on the other hand, young people say that this has not decreased the youth crime rate.
Nowadays in Chile we are living into a society where levels of youth crime are raising, so it is impossible not to wonder if curfew could be the solution for all the youth crime problems in Chile…
In my opinion, this is something that will be hard to do in Chile because crime is not a thing that only happens at nights, it happens at any time of the day, and not only done by young people, but those days youth crime is something common though. In order to face delinquency, Chile has to do other things such as create strong laws for criminals and not orders that are even for civil people.

CuBaN eDuCaTioN
This week the presentation was in charge of Katherinne, Fabián and Pedro, my classmates. They talked about Cuban educational system. Their presentation was very good but sometimes I think it was a lot of information in every slide.
Talking about Cuba is something really hard because everyone has something to say related to the topic, and talking about education in Cuba is even much more difficult.
Cuba has an educational system that most countries would want to have, because studying is guarantee for everyone inside the country.
My classmates through their presentation wanted to show us if this system could be brought to Chile in order to improve and have a better system here. This point was the main idea to discuss during the debate.

WoRDLe.NeT
We went to computer lab and we were playing with the web page that Mr. Litman gave us. This page was wordle.net
Here you can write anything you want, and the program puts it in a very funny way.
My sentence is a line taken of one of my favourite songs, Love Song by Sarah Bareilles.
"You are not what I thought you were"...
This is what I did.

"BRiTiSH EDUCATiONAL SYSTEM"
When we hear the concept of public schools, we tend to relate public schools and government, but in England this means private schools. They also talked about what the characteristics are in a public school and they are boarding schools in most cases.
I really did like their presentation because it was about something that I personally did not know. Their presentation was really concise, they only mentioned important points that we needed to know. During the debate, I was participating in the against group, I could not choose it but I was great there.
As a group, our statement was “these kinds of schools are not the best option because here children grow alone, without love and care of their parents and schools only care of academic results and children have to receive education and love as well. Especially from their parents”
The debate was really good, everyone had to speak and give their opinion and for a while, opinions were so passionate.

MaRía MúSiCa & HaLF LiTeR oF WaTeR
I agree that this girl did not do something that she can be proud of, but I think that students do not see any chance in education and they want to be listened and they do not get that either.Without a doubt, this name will be on the news for awhile, but I consider that our authorities should be doing something in order to improve our educational system instead of keeping talking about María Música and half a liter of water.
